14. White Cockade

Originally a Scottish Measure (air), one of its first publications was in 1687. The cockade is a ribbon shaped like a rosette worn on hats to show the wearer’s loyalty. Worn by Jacobite rebels in both the 1715 and 1745 uprisings in Scotland and Ireland, the high percentage of Scotch-Irish immigrants in America assured its adoption during the American Revolution. (Kuntz) A Porter writes this David R tune in the key of E, but a key change to G modal gives a melody closer to the familiar one. (Harrison)
